How to Make a Mini Green House
from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit
Recycle your empty plastic bottles into useful minature greenhouses and get your seedlings off to a flying start.
Make a single plant greenhouse or one that will hold 4-5 plants.
Steps
- Choose which greenhouse you would like to make. A large soda bottle is the perfect size for a single plant, while a water bottle in a 1 gallon (5 litre) size is ideal for growing multiple plants.
- Take your empty soda bottle and rinse it out. Remove the label and the bottle top.
- Place the bottle on a firm surface and use a pair of sharp scissors to puncture the bottle about 2 inches up from the bottom.
- Insert one blade of the scissors into the hole and cut all of the way around the bottle.
- Discard the bottom portion of the bottle.
- Take your bottle and place it over your seed starter pot or newspaper pot.
- Follow these instructions to make a larger greenhouse. Take a large water bottle and remove the bottle top and the label.
- Place the bottle on a firm surface. Measure up about 3 inches from the bottom of the bottle and use sharp scissors to puncture the side.
- Cut all the way around the bottle. You now have two pieces.
- Turn the base portion of the bottle upside down on a firm surface and use scissors to pierce five or six holes in the bottom. This is now your planting tray.
- Take a double thickness of newspaper and use it to line the planting tray.
- Fill the planting tray with compost.
- Take the other part of the bottle and cut four, one inch slits in the sides of the bottle, start from the bottom edge and cut upwards. This enables the bottle to fit over the planting tray.
- Place the bottle over the planting tray and push down so that it is secure.
Tips
- Water your plants through the hole at the top of the bottle.
- When moving your mini greehouse, use your hand to support it from underneath.
Warnings
- Be careful when using scissors to puncture the side of the bottle. If you are not holding the bottle firmly enough it could slip and you might cut yourself.
- Children should not attempt to puncture the bottle.
